Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.

Police state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.

The fluid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Officers then found multiple other marked vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Officials state early analysis suggest the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; authorities are not yet aware of any injuries in connection with the incident," they commented.

City officials said they were working "to resolve the incident" and have requested to the community for information.

A high-ranking political figure stated the attack made him speechless and needed to be addressed rapidly.

"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, mentioning the killing of nine people by a gunman targeting residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
