RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels down to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he said. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
