European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
