The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
